Bonnie’s Bungalow: When Homeschoolers Build with Purpose (and Heart)

I often say that education comes alive when it’s meaningful—but yesterday, I witnessed something even more powerful: learners building not just a structure, but a legacy of gratitude.

My homeschool co-op has been incredibly blessed this year to gather weekly at Braveheart Farm—a beautiful nonprofit space where families have come together to learn, grow, and build community. From book discussions and cooking classes to history lessons and hands-on activities, this space has become a second home… and it’s been offered to us completely free of charge.  So I suggested that we plan an activity that gives our learners an opportunity to give back to Braveheart Farm by doing a special build with Voskill.  

A Learner-Led Build with a Purpose
Ten learners came together with one shared goal: to design and build a shelter for the farm’s newest addition Bonnie, the goat.  Bonnie's Bungalow was guided by Mike and his team from Voskill in a way that allowed the students create not just follow instructions.

From the very beginning, this was their project.

• They helped unload materials
• They discussed and decided on the structure
• They explored angles and shapes, working through a triangular design
• They measured, adjusted, and even improvised

​This wasn’t a kit. There were no pre-cut pieces.

This was real-world problem solving.

Where Woodworking Meets Math, Mentorship, and Life Skills
What made this build so special wasn’t just the finished structure—it was everything that happened along the way.
Learners received hands-on instruction in:

• Safety first: Proper use of tools, including eye and ear protection
• Mathematical thinking: Applying concepts from trigonometry and even calculus to determine angles and structure
• Critical thinking: Making decisions in real-time when things didn’t go as planned
• Teamwork: Working in groups, supporting each other, and sharing ideas

And yes—mistakes were made.
But instead of setbacks, they became opportunities.

Mike and his team didn’t just teach woodworking—they mentored. They spoke into these learners’ futures, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical wisdom for life beyond the build.

Confidence Built Board by Board
Over the course of just 5½ hours, something incredible happened.

Learners who may have never picked up a power tool before:

• Gained confidence
• Took ownership
• Solved real problems
• Created something lasting

They left not just with new skills, but with something deeper:

“I helped build that.”

That sense of ownership and pride is something no worksheet can replicate.
