ASCEND Classes for Homeschool Learners

Advancing STEM-Community Engagement Through Neuroscience Discovery (ASCEND)

​​Science comes alive when learners can see, question, and explore concepts in real time. The ASCEND classes give homeschool middle and high school learners an opportunity to engage directly with neuroscience through guided instruction, hands-on activities, interactive games, and behind-the-scenes exposure to real scientific research.

Led by a college professor, learners explore topics connected to the brain including memory, emotions, behavior, neural pathways, sleep, and decision-making in a way that is engaging and approachable. Learners are encouraged to ask questions throughout the class, and discussions may naturally shift based on their curiosity and interests. The focus is less on following a rigid curriculum and more on encouraging learners to think critically and explore scientific ideas more deeply.

During recent lab tours, learners discovered that researchers are currently studying conditions such as alcoholism, cocaine addiction, PTSD, and myasthenia gravis using animal models to better understand the brain and nervous system. They also learned how scientists use green fluorescent proteins originally discovered in jellyfish to help identify neurons and other proteins within the brain.

In addition to the academic concepts, learners participate in hands-on activities and games that make the experience interactive and fun, sometimes even adding a little friendly competition along the way.

Each ASCEND class is designed to stand on its own, so learners can attend individual sessions or participate regularly. Because discussions and activities evolve based on the learners in the room, no two experiences are exactly the same, and returning learners often discover something new each time.

Experiences like ASCEND help homeschool learners move beyond passive learning and into active discovery. When learners are given space to investigate ideas, engage with experts, and connect classroom concepts to real-world applications, STEM education becomes more meaningful, memorable, and inspiring.
